I can’t decide if this funny or creeepily sexist. On the one hand, as a former Barbie devotee, I like making Barbie an example of female leadership to little girls. I personally was inspired by my Olympic Swimmer Barbie to think of her, and by extension myself, as something other than a fashion plate or Ken’s girlfriend. On the other hand, does the suit really have to be pink? With purple frills? I’m all for ditching overly masculinized suits in muted tones, but couldn’t it have been for something a little more fashion forward?
And what exactly is Barbie’s party allegiance? I mean, Obama’s already clinched the Democratic nomination, so is she running as a third-party candidate or a spoiler at the GOP convention? What about her policy platform? Has she finally traded in that gas-guzzling convertible for a more fuel-efficient vehicle? Where does she stand on Iran? The Ryan budget?
Barbie would undoubtedly bring some much needed style to the campaign trail (although her advisors might tell her to take it down a notch), but, bottom line, I need to know there’s some substance behind the suit before I’m on board.
